Crocodile like
"sea serpents"

Erik Pontoppidan recorded a story of an animal of this kind from somewhere along the coast.

Here is that really strange story:
Some fishermen got a 20 feet long weird looking animal in one of their nets. It had four limbs of some kind and reminded of a crocodile. The absolutely terrified fishermen dropped both net and creature back into the sea where it disappeared.

Time: July 30th 1915
At: Somewhere in the North-Atlantic
Seen by: U-28, a German submarine. Commander, Freiherr Georg Günther.

"July 30th 1915 our U-28 torpedoed the British steamer Iberian in the North Atlantic because it was carrying valuable cargo. The steamer sank stern first. The depth of this area is a few thousand meters. When the steamer had been gone for about 25 seconds, it exploded at probably a depth of 1000 m. Shortly after debris from the wreck and a big sea creature was thrown 20 - 30 m out of the sea.

When this occured, we were six people on the bridge: myself, two officers on duty, the machine chief, the navigator and the helmsman. Suddenly our attention was turned towards the weird "thing" that had surfaced. Unfortunately we were not able to take a photography because the animal disappeared within 10 - 15 seconds. It was about 60 feet long, resembled a crocodile, and had four powerful flipper like limbs, and a pointed head.

The explosion of the boilers of the sinking steamer caught the "aquatic crocodile" as we called it, and threw it up at the surface along with the debris.

(I had to translate this story back into english.)

In the time of the dinosaurs there were several types of crocodile like marine or pelagic reptiles. All were predators, and all had evolved from terrestial reptiles. Some species of Ichtyosauria adapted so well through evolution that they actually looked like modern fish species. The Mosasuria line of evolution led to crocodile like species.  These pelagic reptiles all gave birth to live babies. Is it possible that similar creatures still inhabit the big seas?  We cannot state that they do not, since at least 90 % of the sea still is unexplored. The surprices of the deep are queing up, and new discoveries are constantly made. Here are two of the ancient "sea crocs", one Ichtyosauria and one Mosasauria.

Cymbospondylus. It belonged to the Ichtyosauria. Length, more than 30 feet. About 220 mill. years ago.

Tylosaurus dyspelor. A Mosasauria, 25 - 39 feet long. 78 - 88 mill. years ago.
