| Like the numerous fjords along our long coast has yielded lots of
old and new stories, the lakes have also had these creatures. In some cases
they probably are visitors, in other cases they must be resident animals. The waterways often contain a row of
lakes abundant in food (presumably fish). It looks like the animals are able to migrate
the rivers from the sea to enter a lake. Or - there exists a sweet water form of these
creatures, which I doubt, since all must have entered the rivers and lakes
from the sea when the enormous glacier cap melted. Nowadays there are many physical obstacles like hydroelectric dams that will
stop the animals from moving freely. One thing is sure; orms in very small lakes sooner or
later have to move on to get enough food. Østfold -

Hallandvatnet at Mandal. Seen in the autumn of 1969. The brothers, Arne and Martin Larsen,
went fishing
at the small Halland lake; a fishing trip that paid off quite differently than intended.
"The sea serpent was black with a light underside, with a head big as a middle
sized turnip. It was long; 2 - 2 1/2 m between each coil. On top of the head there were
two small horns like the horns of a snail. The eyes were big and round, and the nostrils
were like the nostrils of a newborn foal, and the mouth was red with a nice row of teeth.
Its coils reached far out on the lake. "What in the world is that?" Arne said. I did not know, but lifted a huge
stone and threw it against the head of the monster which rested in shallow water just in
front of our feet. Immediately a coil rose 2 m highout the water, and then the head
got out of the water. It flashed its teeth and we could hear a strange and menacing sound."
The brothers got scared and ran away. Martin came back several times, but he never saw
the orm again.

The list grows steadily. More will be added.
If you want to
"monster" hunt in Norwegian lakes, just pick one from the list.
If a lake is lacking fresh observations, the reason may very well be that
no one did bothered to gather these stories and write them down like I
do. The animals are still down there in many lakes, mostly hidden from our view.
