Time: June 2nd 1999
Overcast and calm sea.
Seen at: Ålesund, in the Hessa fjord.
Seen by: Arnt Helge Molvær and his
son Per Tore
Molvær, both residents of Sula.
The son, Per Tore, 16 years old:
"Arriving at "Såthaugen" (small hilltop overlooking the
sea) using my binoculars I was able to observe somthing brown and
long surrounded by foam or fat.
It looked like a gigantic anaconda lying in the surface feedind on a dead
whale. My father handed me the camera and told me to continue filming. In
the meanwhile he would go back and try to get a boat to go out, and try to
get a closer look at the object. I filmed for 8 minutes."
The
footage
With the kind permission of Arnt Helge Molvaer I am able
to present a 1999 footage of the Aalesund sea serpent in the Hessa fjord,
the same footage that was used by the local Tv company "TV Sunnmøre"
in their newscast the next day.
The stills are from the same footage.

The video camera was a digital J.V.C
Gr.Dv.M5
[The video of 5,23 MB - 8,40 min may take some time to download,
due
to
the fact that I have not been able to edit the footage
in order to create shorter and easier downloads.]

-
The footage is a direct copy of the raw video footage
shot nearly two years ago, - and has not been tampered with in any
way. I do not possess the software enabling me to edit the footage in
any way. It is shown here exactly as I acquired it.
-
The footage is the same shown on the TV Sunnmøre
evening news the next day.
-
The footage contains sound; statics and other
disturbances, conversation between father and son, and the sound from
a boat engine.
-
The footage has not been professionally analysed.
-
The first part is relatively calm (for a man who just
shoots something he has never seen before), done by Arnt Helge Molvær.
The rest is far more blurred, done by the 16 year old son.
Unfortunately no pod was used.
-
At this point of time, 8.00 p.m. (20.00), the light
conditions were deteriorating.
-
The footage was shot from a small hills, close to the
shore and 75 m higher.
-
Arnt Helge Molvaer conducts the initial filming (upon
arrival to the hilltop from where he one hour earlier detected the
monster and watched it through his binoculars).
-
The sound track: Arnt Helge tells his son how he first
spotted an orca in the sea." Then the monster appeared on a
course towards the orca, which caused the orca to disappear." At
first he thought it might be a shark, but then he noticed the enormous
length of the creature and saw a dorsal fin positioned at the front
part of it.
-
The son continues to film as the father runs back
again, this time to see if he can get a close by neighbour to take him
out in a boat. The son zooms in and out, trying to get it all
recorded. At the end the dunk - dunk - dunk sounds from a boat engie
can be heard.
-
In he footage a white area of the sea close to the
carcass can be seen. This is foam/fat from the dead whale`s blubber.
-
In the footage a whitish stripe can be seen in the
surface of the sea. This is the same foam/fat and blubber that came
from the floating cadaver, drifting away by the waves. The cadaver was
initially moved quite a bit by the giant serpent.
The
stills
Stills
from the video footage, distance about 900 m.
The dark spot is the whale cadaver. Det whitish part is floating foam
or fat from the cadaver. The narrow and s-shaped part below the whale
is the giant snake feeding on the dead whale.

The still a bit enhanced. |
A couple of more stills, may be a bit further off.
Arnt Helge Molvaer: "When I got to a neighbour with a
boat, the serpent was gone. All we saw was this white foam or fat."
By leaving his video camera at home when out for a walk
Molvaer missed the opportunity of a life time to record an uknown sea
creature at relatively close range. Instead he had to settle for a shot at
almost 1 kilometer and under deteriorating light conditions. There`s a
positive side to it though. He brought back another witness, his son. Molvaer will probably
never again leave his house without his video camera.
