The Sula
sea serpent

Time: March 18th 2001, Sunday 9.30  - 9.45.
At:
Storfjorden, south west of Aalesund.
Observed by: two fishermen on board the fishing vessel KLARING.

The news report another sighting on the north west coast of Norway.

"Two fishermen are quite sure that they saw something in the Storfjorden between SULA and HAREID in Møre and Romsdal county on Sunday morning. For almost two minutes the experienced fishermen are supposed to have observed a large creature speed along the surface of the water. NRK (the national broadcasting channel) reports that the two fishermen did their unique observation shortly before 11 a.m.
On board the small fishing vessel Klaring the men were busy preparing their nets, when the two men suddenly spotted the rare creature 100 to 150 meters away from the boa
t."

Sea captain Terje Vestre of Klaring:

- "The weather conditions were brilliant sunshine, and we had a dead calm sea. I had no reasons to not to believe them when they shortly afterwards told me what they had just seen."
He himself has been an active fisherman since 1975, and he points to the fact that both men are experienced fishermen. He will not rule out the possibility that a big sea creature may live in the 400 m deep fjord.
- "When I was a boy, a dead giant squid weighing 7 - 12 tons was stranded next to the ferry quays in the Sula sound. They had to use dynamite to get it off the shore."
What the two fishermen did see could actually have been a real sea serpent. A similar creature has been seen in the same general area. Last summer a man actually filmed an unidentified sea creature (The Ålesund sea serpent) in the Borgund fjord not far away from the Sula fjord.
- "I am rather pissed off that they did not let me know right away when they spotted the sea serpent, but I can understand that they were lost to the fascination of seing the creature. I am quite sure that there are "things" down there in the depth of the fjord that we yet do not know."

Storfjorden (The big fjord) continues towards east. The long and deep
fjords form a maze leaving much of the outer landscape an archipelago.
Sulafjorden (The Sula fjord) is the outer part of Storfjorden which
continues south as Sykkylvfjorden and ends as Geirangerfjorden.
An X at the map marks the sighting.

Here is the story , based on an interview with Terje Vestre. The boat Klaring is currently on it`s way up far north to Lofoten to participate in the annual Lofoten fisheries.

Sunday 9.30 - 9.45, March 18th 2001. This Sunday morning Klaring headed for Storfjorden to clean up some nets. The herring season had just come to an end, so it was necessary to put the nets in the water to clean them of dead fish and the likes. The men were preparing to put out a net when the strange animal showed up.

The weather: Nice and calm sea, only disturbed by an occasinal gust of a slight breeze.

The sighting: The two men suddenly saw the beast swimming 100 - 150 m away from the vessel. One of them immediately tried to alert Terje Vestre, but since he had gone below in an errand he missed the opportunity of a lifetime. Only when the animal was disappeared the excited men were able to tell their story to their boss. He was quite "pissed off" (in his own words) having missed seing the creature, since he would like to have seen it himself, and he also kept a camera close by that could have documented the unique event, - had he been available.

The two fishermen "have seen all there is to see at sea" according to Vestre, only this time they saw something quite new to them. Two huge humps were visible above the surface, each of a length of
5 - 10 m. The foremost hump broke the surface creating foam and water spray as the animal swam at high speed. From the movements of the water and what they were able to see, the animal extended far behind the rear hump.
The humps were rounded/oval shaped and dark of colour.

An estimated length of the observed animal, how fast it swam and other details, is only possible to know when the fishing boat Klaring returns from Lofoten in May. Terje Vestre is utterly convinced that the two men spoke the truth, and he himself believes that the deep fjords may very well contain animals unknown to science. The rumour goes that a woman in the fjords did an observation, and six fishermen also saw an unknown creature.

A rough sketch just to illustrate the sighting.
